There are two display systems, the immersive Windows configuration called a CAVE, and the single-wall stereo display called a ConCAVE. Below is just what we have, not what we would currently recommend. Ken Ridley, kdr@tc.cornell.edu, might best answer questions on the latest choices for video cards and projectors.
The CAVE
Our CAVE is a three-wall Windows Cube configuration, built by hand for an SGI CAVE long ago. We project onto two walls and a floor.
Computers
- three display nodes
- Dell Precision 650
- Windows XP
- Dual 3.06 Ghz Xeon with Hyperthreading
- 2 Gb RAM
- Two SCSI drives on Adaptec Ultra160 Raid
- 3D Labs Wildcat 7210 video card gigabit ethernet
- three development display nodes
- Dell Precision 620
- Windows Advanced Server 2000
- Pentium III Dual-proc 1 GHz
- 1 Gb RAM
- Two SCSI drives on Adaptec Ultra160 Raid
- 3D Labs Wildcat 4210 video card cLAN Gigabit adapter
- head machine - a recent Xeon with a moderate video card. We run ANSYS, Fluent, OpenDX and more on this machine, and it is cheaper to upgrade than all the display nodes.
- Trackdserver - a PIII for tracker input. There isn't much load on this machine, so it doesn't matter.
Projectors and Other
- Three BARCO 808 projectors
- Three Extron RGB 202 Rxi with ADSP to convert video to coax
- 3COM Superstacker 3 Switch, 3C16980A
- cLAN Giganet switch
- Two Flock of Birds receivers, model 6DF0B
- One Flock of Birds controller
- Intersense IS900 wireless tracking system
Software Systems
There are three separate software systems designed to make the CAVE part of a scalable graphics display solution.
We augment these with a tracker service called Trackd.
The ConCAVE
Not a CAVE at all because it doesn't run CAVELib and has no head tracking, this is an LCD projection screen suitable for use with room lights on. It can be more appropriate to a class environment.
