Let's stop right here so you can make the link to the html documentation. From your favorite web browser, using the "Open Local File" or equivalent command, browse to the $DXROOT/html directory and set a bookmark for "allguide.htm". This is the most current version of the documentation produced for the commercial version of DX with some additions made since that time. To date, no one has made the huge effort of updating all the documentation to reflect all the features or changes that have arisen since OpenDX was released. However, the information in the html pages is still largely correct and very useful.
Note that if you download the commercial version from the IBM site, there are also PostScript documents that would appear to be the same as the html. However, these have not been updated to match the html versions, so they are mostly not worth printing out at this point. (In fact, we pulled them out of the OpenDX distribution because of their size.) Instead, you can find PDF versions (Adobe Acrobat Reader or the browser plug-in is required) of the most recently printed documents (circa 1997) at http://www.opendx.org/support.html. under the Documentation subheading. David Thompson, a major contributor to the open source effort, created these for all of our benefit. You will need to browse these PDF files to see certain tables and equations that did not translate correctly into the limited typesetting capability of html. Particularly, syntax related to importing data files, found in the Quickstart Guide is clear in the PDF and garbage in html. Someday, someone, maybe me, maybe you, will fix the html to point to the PDFs. Meanwhile, if you come across something that is unreadable in the html, check the PDF version to see if it's properly formatted there. Just remember that the html is more up-to-date where it is legible.
