Hawaiian Volcano Observatory - USGS website monitoring the Hawaiian volcanoes! Lots of pictures and historical information about eruptions. A very neat and easy site to navigate.
NASA Volcanology Team - Information about the project activities of the NASA Earth Observing System Interdisciplinary Science Investigation Volcanology Team. EOS is a series of polar-orbiting remote-sensing satellites planned for launch starting in 1998 and spanning a period of at least 15 years.
Paleontological Research Institution - This museum has an enormous fossil collection. Their online exhibits take you on a tour of the fossils, and also include other earth science resources. In Ithaca, NY.
RockHounds - Lots of info about Gems and Minerals. Has a limited amount information related to other aspects of geology.
Smithsonian Gem & Mineral Collection - This is a collection of photographs of gems and minerals, with a small amount of text about each. The images are very beautiful.
Virtual Earthquake - An interactive web site designed to introduce you to the concepts of how an earthquake epicenter is located and how the Richter Magnitude of an earthquake is determined.
VolcanoWorld - This volcano site is geared to students, and includes topics such as Volcanoes of the World, Ask a Volcanologist, Volcano History, and more.
USGS Education Resources - Links to a variety of education resources from the U.S. Geological Survey, including Ask a Geologist, an e-mail based question and answer resource.
EcoBeaker - EcoBeaker is the premier program for teaching environmental science, ecology, and evolution at both secondary school and university levels. Adopted by hundreds of universities, EcoBeaker lets students see population and community level dynamics on screen while performing the kinds of experiments done by practicing ecologists.

Physical Geography & Remote Sensing
Images from Space - Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR) is a joint U.S.-German-Italian project that uses a highly sophisticated imaging radar to capture images of Earth that are useful to scientists across a great range of disciplines. Check out NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab for more interesting Earth photographs.
Mining Co. Geography Site - Lots of info on all types of geography science, it will take some time to explore!
Odden's Bookmarks - A fantastic site for maps, cartography and GIS data covering the entire world. You can find many thousands of thematic maps for sites all over the planet. Huge site with tons of information.
National Geographic Educational Pages - The education page of National Geographic what else is there to say?! This site contains, maps, classroom ideas, resources and a Faculty Forum. There is also information about receiving grants from National Geographic for interesting geography curricula.
Vegetation Satellite Imagery - Vegetation Condition images based on NDVI (Normalized DifferenceVegetation Index) are available for viewing at this site. The NDVI measures vegetation vigor caused by chlorophyll activity; this is sometimes called "greenness". There are great images here showing the effects of the massive Midwest flood in 1993, the early freeze in 1995, the serious drought in 1996 winter wheat areas, and the late 1996 planting in the eastern corn belt.

America's Wetlands - This site will give you a better understanding of the rich variety of wetlands, their importance, how they are threatened, and what can be done to conserve them for future generations. From the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Wetlands, Oceans, and Watersheds.
Educational Resources for Oceanography and Earth Sciences - These resources deal primarily with global change, oceanography and science education. From JPL. JASON Project - Dr. Robert D. Ballard founded the JASON Project in 1989, after receiving thousands of letters from children wanting to know how he discovered the RMS Titanic. Each year, a two-week scientific expedition is mounted in a remote part of the world and broadcast in real-time, using state-of-the-art technology.
Ocean of Know - Working to re-configure the ways in which marine biology is taught and learned, and to explore the educational potential of distance learning. This site is an on-line biology lab and lesson plan, where tele-students can read about a topic and then participate in scientific experiments.
Oceanography from the Space Shuttle - Beautiful photographs and descriptions of the Earth's oceans, islands, and coastlines. This is a Web version of the 1989 publication Oceanography from the Space Shuttle produced by NASA in cooperation with the Office of Naval Research and the National Center for Atmospheric Research.
Seaweed! - This site is a fairly technical exploration of Seaweed...if you have any questions about this organism this is the place go.
Studying Ocean Color From Space - Includes topics such as phytoplankton, ocean chemistry, and the role of carbon dioxide. This is intended to be a teacher's guide, but is equally interesting to students. From SEAWIFS, NASA's global ocean colour monitoring mission.
Shoals Marine Laboratory, run by Cornell University and the University of New Hampshire, offers summer courses for high school students. For example, the most recent course, Oceanography of the Gulf of Maine, offered a unique opportunity for students to experience life on board a sailing vessel and on an island off the coast of New Hampshire, studying oceanic and coastal marine environments.
Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network - The Texas Marine Mammal Stranding Network (TMMSN) is an organization dedicated to the study and conservation of marine mammals. One of the things they focus on is handling stranded (beached) animals.
USGS Water Resources - A great resource for real-time and historical data on water resources in the United States. This site has a great deal of primary information that can be used by teachers and students in the classroom for analysis. You can also search for data collection points that are close to where you live to make the analysis more interesting!!
Whale Watching Web - This site is all about whale watching and politics surrounding the protection of whales and other cetaceans. Has som target="new"e good political and scientific information and many pictures!

Water Environment Federation - WEF is a nonprofit technical training association for professionals in the water and wastewater treatment industry.  One key item is the Stockholm water prize where a student/team of students can be recognized for a water science project in Sweden! And for teachers, there is a seminar done at the annual conference.
Practical Ocean Energy Management Systems - Practical Ocean Energy Management Systems, Inc., (POEMS) a California nonprofit, is a philanthropic stewardship organized to educate the general public on the importance of developing ocean energy (e.g. wave, tidal, current, thermocline) as an environmentally clean, renewable resource and to provide education, scientific and funding assistance to ocean energy technology developers.

EnergyEd - This site is made by Ergon Energy, an Australian energy company. It is an interactive, multi-media energy education site. You can take a virtual reality tour of different types of power stations, watch videos, or take an on-line quiz.
Environmental Education Link - This page is dedicated to compiling information from the internet concerning environmental education. There are areas for students, teachers and organizations. There is a lot of information here so take some time to explore and find what you need.
Gap Analysis in Biodiversity - Gap Analysis is a proactive approach to protecting biodiversity. It seeks to identify gaps in the biological reserve network that may be filled through the establishment of new reserves or changes in land management practices.
NOAA Paleo Global Warming Home - This site is dedicated to helping educate, inform and highlight the importance of paleoclimate research, as well as to show how paleoclimate research relates to global warming.
Toxics and the Environment - The Chemical Scorecard sponsored by the Environmental Defense Fund makes it easy to find information concerning toxics in your local environment fast. You can answer questions like: where these chemicals come from in your community, what the known or suspected effects are, and what actions you can take.

Environmental Activism

American Rivers - American Rivers a leading national river-conservation organization with a goal to protect and restore America's river systems and to foster a river stewardship ethic.
Earth Day - An Earth Day web site that includes an interactive kids page, an environmental quiz, a message from the Founder of Earth Day, and much more.
Econet - An activist based network for ecological sustainability and environmental justice. Political place but there is lots of information here if you can separate the wheat from the chaff!
EnviroLink - A non-profit organization that unites hundreds of organizations an volunteers around the world with millions of people in over 150 countries. Projects include libraries, news service, environmental chat rooms, and educational resources. Lots here to look at if your interested.
Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment - GLOBE is a worldwide science and education program coordinating the work of students, teachers, and scientists to monitor the global environment. It was announced by then Vice President Al Gore on Earth Day in 1994 as a hands-on program to link your students with other students and with scientists around the world.
John Muir Exhibit - A collection of materials on the life and legacy of this naturalist, conservationist, and writer. John Muir was one of the founders of the Sierra Club, and he worked with Theodore Roosevelt to establish many National Forests, Parks, and Monuments.
Rainforest Action Network - Rainforest information, kids' activities, and info about how you can get involved to preserve the Earth's rainforests.

Earth Systems Science Resource Center - Excellent links to sites relating to all aspects of earth science: lithosphere, hydrosphere, oceans, atmosphere, planetary, gis/remote sensing, the environment, plus a section of "exercises in earth system sciences" for educators.
EPA Student Center - This is a resource primer on environmental issue for students. This site contains a decent amount of information about a wide range of topics, activities, scholarships and clubs that may be of interest to students of environmental problems.
Environmental Inquiry Project - Environmental Inquiry is a secondary school curriculum development project at Cornell University, dedicated to the creation, evaluation, and distribution of environmental science materials. The subject-matter includes environmental toxicology, bioremediation and waste management, and watershed studies.
