American Computer Science League (ACSL) - ACSL organizes national competitions in computer science and computer programming for junior and senior high school students. BABEL: A Glossary of Computer Oriented Abbreviations and Acronyms - Over 3000 entries. The CAVE: A Virtual Reality Theater - The CAVE is a surround-screen, surround-sound, projection-based virtual reality system. From the Electronic Visualization Laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Computing Dictionary - You type in a computer-related word, it tells you the meaning. Experimental and Computational Materials - The Center for Polymer Studies, a scientific visualization research center in the Physics Department at Boston University, utilizes expertise in interdisciplinary physics research to develop experimental and computational materials for K-12 and undergraduate education. Includes summer institutes, software for fractal and probability simulation and for molecular dynamics simulation, and more. Gamelan's Java Site - Java is an object-oriented language that is gaining in popularity. Web documents can imbed and link to Java programs. The Gamelan site contains links to lots of Java information and sample programs. Best viewed with a browser that can interpret Java applets. ZByte Cards and Card Games - ZByte playing cards substitute symbols of logic (AND, OR, NOT, BYTE) for the usual four suits, and feature binary numbers in addition to the base-10 numbers used on customary decks of cards. Games that teach elements of logic, computing, and math have been designed for use with these cards. Computer Languages, Tutorials & On-line Courses C++ - Introduction to Object Oriented Programming - Using C++ won two awards in the "Best of the Web 94" contest. Combines a MOO and an HTML hypertextbook, and includes links to other C++ resources. Perl - Perl is an interpreted scripting language optimized for generating reports gleaned from text files. It is also a good language for almost any kind of shell scripting. It combines the best features of C, sed, awk and sh, while avoiding most of the limitations of those. Raytracing - This site is by and for people interested in creating original '3-d' computer graphics programs and or images. UNIXhelp - This is an online help manual for Unix. StarLogo - A programmable modeling environment for exploring the behaviors of decentralized systems, such as bird flocks, traffic jams, and ant colonies. Guides and Reference Materials W3C - World Wide Web Consortium - develops interoperable technologies (specifications, guidelines, software, and tools) to lead the Web to its full potential. W3C is a forum for information, commerce, communication, and collective understanding Create Your Own Web Page - A guide for students to create their own web pages. From Small Planet Communications. Internet Request For Comments (RFC) - The Internet Request For Comments (or RFC) documents are the written definitions of the protocols and policies of the Internet. Included is a lot of useful reference material, as well as Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) lists -- with answers -- about the Internet. Internet Tools Summary - Information relating to tools available on the Internet for network information retrieval and Computer-Mediated Communication. A Modular Approach to Teaching the World Wide Web - Materials to assist in teaching students to use the web, including basic concepts, using the web for research, searching, and evaluating web resources. Alta Vista - A very fast and comprehensive search engine. I like this one because the top page includes simple examples of how to use it. EINet Galaxy - This directory contains many more topics on the top level page. Lycos Search and Directory - Another excellent search engine. Netscape's Internet Search Page - This page includes links to many of the best search engines. Yahoo Database - A well-organized with a very manageable set of topics at the top level.
