There are hundreds of web sites that include general resources for educators. The few that are listed in this section are truly excellent, but their focus is too broad to fit into any one of the other sections on this page.
Pitsco Resources for Teachers - This site has so much good information that it was hard to categorize. It includes links about policies, activities, curriculum, questions and answers about the Internet, and much, much more.
Teachers.Net - Information for teachers about using the Web. Includes a "homepage maker" to assist teachers with creating home pages for their schools, a Website Handbook, and more.
Getting Your School On the Web
Canada's SchoolNet - A cooperative initiative of Canada's provincial, territorial and federal governments, educators, universities and colleges and industry. It aims to link all of Canada's 16,000 plus schools to the electronic highway as quickly as possible.
The Computers for Schools Program - The Computers for Schools Association is a national non-profit dedicated to providing a low cost alternative for achieving technology in the classroom.
Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) - Material related to school networking, including many listservs. From their mission statement, "The Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) is the national voice for advocating access to the emerging National Information Infrastructure in schools."
The Switched-On Classroom - A 250-page book outlining a 12-step technology planning and implementation process for public schools. Includes many case studies.
Technology for All Americans - A project to create national standards for technology education in grades K through 12. The effort is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA).
Teaching Methods and Curriculum
Educators' Reference Desk - Provides access to resources including lesson plans, question archive and the ERIC Database--the world's largest source of education information.
Eastern New Mexico University (ENMU) Tech/Web Examples - This page provides material that is geared towards K-12 teaching. Also includes links to sites that provide lesson plans, teaching material and related sources. Some of these pages may also contain material that could be used in a remedial/developmental college course.
Global SchoolNet Foundation (GSN) - GSN coordinates collaborative internet-based projects linking schoolchildren and educators around the world. Their Web site could keep you going for a very long time.
Houghton Mifflin's Education Place - An excellent collection of math, language arts, and social studies resources, as well as useful information for parents. Mostly for grades K-8.
SCORE - Schools of California Online Resources for Educators This site is part of a network of online resource centers in California linking quality resources from the World Wide Web to the California curriculum. These particular sites were chosen for their accuracy, grade appropriateness, and richness.
ICONnect - School library media specialists, teachers, and students will find the opportunity to learn the skills necessary to navigate the information superhighway right here.
The Franklin Institute Science Museum - More than just online museum exhibits, the Franklin Institute's Web pages include excellent educational hotlists.
The Lesson Plans Page - This page consists of well over 100 lesson plans that are helpful for anyone in elementary education.
Odyssey of the Mind - An educational program that fosters creative thinking and problem-solving skills among participating students from kindergarten through college. It features an annual competition component at local through international levels. Students solve problems in a variety of areas, from building mechanical devices such as spring-driven vehicles to giving their own interpretation of literary classics.
Association for Experiential Education - A not for profit, international professional organization with roots in adventure education, committed to the development, practice, and evaluation of experiential learning in all settings.
System Dynamics in Education Project - The goal of this project is to develop classroom projects, complete with modeling software examples when applicable, that might assist a teacher and the students in making the educational challenge easier and more meaningful.
Teacher Focus - An online community forum where educators can very easily communicate with each other through threaded online discussions. Our site gives teachers a place to put their ideas and questions to be discussed and answered by other educators just like them through our extensive software suite that allows nearly real-time communication between educators through a very user-friendly web interface.
JazzScience - JazzScience provides ready-to-hand-out experiment kits for middle school and high school classrooms, where great theories of physical science are compared with human thought, communications and interactions. The experiment kits include worksheets, data sheets and a teacher's guide. The experiments help students learn important scientific concepts and at the same time discover more about people.
STAR-Online - This online staff development provides pre-service, new, and veteran teachers the training, support, and communication links necessary for their continued success in the classroom.
Special Programs for Educators and Students
Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) - CIEE is a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization dedicated to helping people gain understanding, acquire knowledge, and develop skills for living in a globally interdependent and culturally diverse world.
Long-Term Ecological Research - Teacher's Manual of Classroom Activities - The activities in the Manual introduce high school students to the National Science Foundation's Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) program and the research conducted at LTER sites.
NASA Lewis Educational Programs - The NASA Lewis Research Center, in Cleveland, Ohio, sponsors a variety of programs for students and educators.
National Teachers Enhancement Network (NTEN) - NTEN offers graduate-credit science and mathematics courses to teachers nationally. Teachers are able to participate in the telecomputing courses from convenient home or work locations by dial-up modem connections or Internet access.
NSF Directorate for Education and Human Resources (EHR) - The National Science Foundation sponsors programs for students at all grade levels.
The Research Science Institute - A six-week summer program for exceptional high school students, sponsored by The Center for Excellence in Education. The core of RSI is a research internship, during which participants conduct individual projects under the mentorship of eminent scientists and researchers. The program is held at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
SEM - This program addresses the inclusion in Science, Engineering and Math (SEM) curricula of individuals with disabilities. The goal of the project is to engage, recruit, and retain individuals with disabilities in SEM educational programs so that the current under representation of these individuals in both SEM educational programs and professions will be reversed. This project is funded by the National Science Foundation and comes under the Program for Persons with Disabilities.
Summer Research Program for Secondary School Science Teachers - The primary aim of this program is to provide secondary school science teachers with hands-on experience in scientific research. Teachers are assigned to research laboratories within their teaching discipline (e.g. chemistry, physics, biology). The program is sponsored by Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, and is currently only open to educators from the New York City area.
ThinkQuest - A contest designed to encourage students from different schools and backgrounds to work together in teams to create valuable educational tools on the Internet. The contest focuses on enhancing students' ability to communicate and cooperate in a global, interconnected environment. In addition to contest information, the web site houses a library of over 100 previous entries.
Organizations and Electronic Discussion Lists
The EdWeb List of Lists - This is a long list of discussion lists that pertain to general education, K-12 education, education technology and education reform.
Intercultural E-Mail Classroom Connections - A collection of mailing lists provided by St. Olaf College as a free service to help teachers and classes link with partners in other countries and cultures for e-mail classroom pen-pal and project exchanges.
Listservs, Newsgroups, and FTP Sites - A comprehensive Internet reference to discussion lists, newsgroups, FTP sites, and other Internet Services.
The LISTSERV list reference - Browse any of the 7,655 public LISTSERV lists on the Internet, search for mailing lists of interest, and get information about LISTSERV host sites.
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) - NSTA is the largest organization in the world committed to the improvement of science education. Their activities include publications, conventions, programs, and services for science educators. Check out the Scope and Sequence pages exploring content standards and curriculum.
The Scout Report - A weekly report of valuable resources and network tools on the Internet focusing on items which are most useful to educators and researchers. Read it on the Web or receive it as e-mail.
Teacher's Edition Online (TeachNet) - An award-winning education website for K-12 teachers, with teacher contributions, a mailing list, a weekly newsletter, lesson ideas, and creative tips on a wide range of subjects.
Dinosaurs on Ice - During the 1990-91 Antarctic field season, an NSF-funded researcher, William R. Hammer, discovered the remains of Cryolophosaurus ellioti, or "frozen crested reptile." Among the Antarctic dinosaur's telltale features were its large skull crest. A webcast by Dr. William R. Hammer, Wednesday, February 26, 2003, 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., EST.
